A little goes a long way

This weekend our oldest is going camping. And it occurred to me that while we packed his gear, we actually have the makings of a good bug out bag.

Our family really enjoys camping and outdoor activities. And while we don’t get to go as much as I would like due to my injury, we still have a lot of gear. Bug out bags at their core are not that different.

Think about it.

What goes into camping gear? Water, snacks, extra clothes, flashlight, first aid kit, etc.

Now what are some of the key items for a bug out bag? Looks pretty darn close to me.

So why can’t your camping gear become the beginning of your preparedness journey?

The thing is we often get caught up in all these things we need and forget to look at what we already have. Our house is full of the exact items we already use in our daily lives. Could a second version of these items work for your get-out gear?

Buying everything new all at once will take a chunk of your budget. And that might not be feasible. Plus, it’s super stressful.

The best way to be prepared is to start small. When the pile of things to do is so big, you don’t want to even try. Instead take it one tiny step at a time using the supplies you already have.

This little bit of effort and low cost will get you way farther than dumping your budget into perfection. Now you don’t have to worry about bug-out gear gathering dust. So go camping and enjoy being prepared.
