April 19 - Kids looking out the window

Living in a state of constant overwhelm

It’s not uncommon to overload your schedule and get overwhelmed. Sometimes it’s surface level and you see it. Other times it’s lurking below the surface, right in the back of your mind.

Running a homestead has lots of moving parts. So does raising children. Add the two together and it can feel like you can barely breathe.

Lately this has been the case with our family. We signed our kids up for a co-op this last fall. And the fall went well. However, spring has had quite a few bumps.

So, with lots of time spent on co-op, we feel behind a little. Then you throw in my VA appointments as we try to navigate my disability. Toss in some schoolwork, chores, business tasks, gardening and the world falls apart quickly.

It’s not uncommon for our house to look like a bomb went off. And the kids are pushing back from all the stress.

The problem is the stress we put on ourselves.

Everything has a season. Yes, we need to plant a garden. And the kids need schooling to be productive in the future.

But do we need to do everything. Or can we better plan and hold a less insane line. And we aren’t alone.

Maybe instead of pressing forward blind to our sanity, we should all take a good look inside and determine what is most important in our lives.

For us, our children are important. So, we push through the co-op and adjust the schoolwork to balance their needs. And maybe let some other things go so everyone can live a happier life.

Now it’s your turn. What do you need to let go of so you can stop living in a state of overwhelm?
