A quick flip through the news this week will leave you in the middle of a war. As the government nears a month long shutdown, there is a lot of unknowns for many families. What will happen tomorrow?
Part of being prepared is keeping up with the news of today. It’s the only way to know what is going on. The key is to keep an open mind. If you let fear creep in, it becomes very easy to become overwhelmed.
Having a homestead offers a sanctuary from the world. But it’s easy enough to let the world slip in and tear you down.
Building peace starts in your own home.
Start small with family scriptures, and family time. A strong family can pull through even in the worst situations. And a strong faith in Christ will keep you on the right path, while keeping fear and overwhelm away.
Next to a strong family comes preparedness. Peace can be found in being prepared for the unknown.
If you have not started already, begin building a 3 month food supply. Don’t go out and buy random stuff but instead stock up on the meals your family eats. We started with a list of 15 or so meals that we know the kids will easily eat.
With a strong family, and food on the shelf, the next key to peace is doing what you love.
Not every task on the homestead will be fun. Some you might flat out hate. The key to peace is to outshine the hated chores with ones you enjoy. Gardening and spending time with nature can calm and bring peace.
Of course, gardening is much harder this time of year. But indoor gardening, hydroponics, or even a greenhouse can give you that comfort.
Animals are another part of doing things you love on the homestead. A half-hour per day spent with your favorite animals can relax you and keep the cares of the world at bay.
While we are stuck in a very turbulent world today, your homestead should always be a place of peace and comfort for you and your family. And if you are not feeling that peace at home, start making the changes to bring it in.
What brings you the most peace on your homestead?
