I learned something this week that seems pretty simple but harder to practice: Knowing you have something is not the same as knowing you have enough of something.
For us this week, it was having enough activated charcoal and homeopathics as a stomach bug swept through our family.
We knew that we had the tools we needed to help everyone feel better. But the reality was far from the truth when we only had a few activated charcoal capsules left in the jar.
It’s easy enough to go through a sickness or some other event that dips into your supplies and then forget to replace the items you used. And it’s not just medication during a sickness. It could be Band-Aids, propane, food stores, paper, or just about anything you use.
In the past I have talked about keeping inventory. While it’s not easy to keep perfect track all the time, it’s important to check in on things from time to time. Because when things are not running smoothly, it’s very easy to forget to replace them later. Or in our case, when you have kids and get sidetracked.
Think about this saying as you prepare for things: “Two is One and One is None”. By following this simple saying you end up more prepared by always having at least one extra on hand.
Start with one room in your house, for example the bathroom and medicine cabinet. Inventory all the supplies you keep on hand and decide on how many you should have for backups. Work the list of items into your budget and start stocking up.
To keep everything checked and in stock, create a room rotation and visit each location at least once a year to keep your supplies up.
