Preparedness does not stop just because you leave the homestead. Rather it’s an always on activity.
If your family goes anywhere, they still need to be safe and secure. Life does not sit around and wait for you to return. And mother nature certainly enjoys throwing a curveball. Heck, one of the nearby mountain passes was closed mid-April due to snow!
Those people who thought they could make it through without issue learned life was not as easy going being stuck in a massive traffic backup, in the middle of nowhere. But those with a car kit or go bag they keep 24/7 probably felt a little better. Even checking the road conditions wouldn’t have saved everyone. Freak storms happen – fast.
The sad thing is that even those who have a go kit might not even have the right things. A car jack, or tool kit does not keep the kids happy while stuck in traffic.
As a father of 5 kids, I don’t have the luxury of winging it and hoping. A long drive is hard enough on little kids. Stuck in the mountains would be a whole different adventure. With probably more than a little crying going around.
Every small adventure can go sideways. But when you plan ahead and prepare for the possible sideways the comfort level of the family goes up. And that sounds like a big win to me.
The problem is not a lack of desire to prepare. Most people want to be ready when things go sideways. The real problem is not knowing where to start.
