Years ago, I had a friend who was homeschooled. Rather than being a reclusive, awkward kid, he was able to do some pretty cool things. And ironically enough, he was probably more prepared for life than I was by the time we graduated.
One of the things that stuck out as I was thinking about the past recently was that my friend had his Ham radio license at 13. From a preparedness standpoint, this gave him a leg up for future family resilience.
Fast forward to today and my oldest also has his Ham license, while two more of our kids are studying for theirs. My homeschooled children have a leg up on their preparedness before they even leave home.
A few years back, we got to take a field trip through a silver mine as seen in the above photo. As a homeschool family, we are able to drop things and go on a fun trip anytime.
Homeschooling has its advantages.
But life skills are different than book lessons. They are not a single point-in-time skill learned by studying. I bring this point home pretty strongly in this week’s article. A camping trip can become skills training.
If you want to see what else can replace hardcore drills and tests, read the full guide here: Build Strong Kids: 5 Fun Ways to Practice Preparedness.
As adults, we can always take extended college classes or participate in a community CERT training course. There are many formal class opportunities out there to continue your learning.
For those looking to be truly prepared, an attitude of always learning is a good first step.
And while you might not be able to join a class all the time, grabbing a book off the shelf to continue stretching your brain can be just as effective. Even fiction books can position our brains to desire learning.
We should never get too old to love learning. And if you hated learning as a kid, it’s not the fault of learning, but rather the skill you had to cram in. Keep trying new things until you find your passion, then dig in deep.
We should all desire a life of homeschooling. Because those who keep learning will be the ones who are truly prepared for anything.
Rooted in preparedness,
