Scratch cooking vs cooking healthy

There is a growing belief that if you make everything from scratch it’s totally healthy. The reality however is totally wrong!

Years ago, we made the choice to start cooking our meals from scratch. We did not like some of the ingredients found in common food items. Most of those did not play well with some underlying health challenges, and some flat out disagreed with our children (I’m looking at you, artificial food dyes).

And while eating healthier by not having some of the bad ingredients helps, it’s not going to solve all the problems. Let me tell you a story about a friend of ours who also cooks some things from scratch.

To be healthy, they home cook some of their meals. Don’t worry, I am not knocking the occasional meal out. We even eat out sometimes. Our friend also runs a side gig baking cakes and cookies from scratch.

The problem our friend has run into is bakery leftovers. Testing new recipes and having excess is causing a great deal of health challenges. Remember these are home made baked goodies. Baked goodies with LOTS of sugar.

So, while they are made from scratch, the entire family is starting to show side effects of sugar. Excess weight and other health challenges are becoming a big problem. The worst part is, they have decided to turn a blind eye to the issue. And when called out, well, let’s just say you don’t want to face that wrath.

You see, there is a big difference between eating a healthy balanced diet from scratch and eating from scratch.

No matter how many carrots you pack into your dinner stir fry, if you wash every meal down with chocolate cake, it will not help your health. Just because there are eggs, wheat, and milk in chocolate cake does not make the sugar content disappear.

Now, hold up before telling me you can’t live without ice cream and doughnuts. I too love a good bowl of ice cream and don’t even get me start on a real maple bar. But they don’t have to be an everyday event.

Avoid excess sugar for long enough and your body might even have trouble with that poor maple bar. Nothing is quite like sugar shakes because you ate a single maple bar. Go far enough and you might end up like Doc in Back to the Future Part III, who can’t take a single shot of liquor before he passes out cold.

And no cheating either. Replacing sugar with coconut sugar might cut some excess, but ANYTHING out of moderation will NEVER be healthy for you.

So, I encourage you to go all out and cook from scratch. Just remember that because you made it “from scratch” does not mean it’s healthy.
