What happens next month?

We spent a lot of time looking at the world around us today. Lots of time on yesterday. And some time on the one of many possible futures. But what of tomorrow? Or next month?

The events happening around the world have a lot of people on edge. Will we go to war? Will something drastic happen that destabilizes our world?

On the other hand, this time of year, most of us already have a garden going. We spend time watering and preparing for the food that the garden will produce. To save seeds and store food for winter. A worthy goal.

By focusing on the little slice of our world that we can control, it allows us to feel secure. Completing tasks like the summer garden, preparing a winter garden, or planning for the next set of animals we want to purchase.

Planning ways to keep your homestead functional all year round is key to self-sufficiency.

No matter what happens around us, if we keep our eye on the local goals we set, things will work out fine. Sometimes being focused on a single goal is enough to get you through. Other times it will break the entire process.

Knowing when to step back and see the big picture helps us plot a straight course. It’s no different than navigating through the woods. Sometimes you need to stop and get your bearings.

This year our family has been hyper-focused on clearing any remaining debt we have. It will take time, and there will be bumps in the road, but our eye is on the prize. Debt free. In turn, however, we have sacrificed a real garden for this year.

Markets, events and business tasks have taken the time we would have used for the garden.

Life will always be a balancing act. Living in today, remembering yesterday’s good, and striving for the best tomorrow possible.

Sometimes our dreams will work out. Other times the world will throw us a curve ball.

It will always be our job to prepare and protect our family today and beyond. But we don’t need to bury ourselves under while doing it.

Slow and steady wins the race. Focus keeps you on the path. And keeps your sanity.
