No matter what you do in life, it pays to be organized.
Sometimes this means keeping your house clean, other times it might be laying out all your clothes before a trip. And your food stores are no different. Organization ensures that nothing goes to waste.
This past week we decided our food stores needed an upgrade. Many months back we were given a cabinet to use as shelves in our house. The catch was this cabinet was designed for use as a clothing armoire. It had drawers and dividers. Not great for food.
So, for many months our food has been stacked up in boxes. Not only has this caused duplicate purchases (I didn’t think we had any more of that…) it’s been awful to rotate.
We purchased some wire rack shelving, and thin plywood sheets to cover the shelves and have spent the week organizing and inventorying what we have. It has definitely shown that we over purchased some items and woefully understocked others.
The key to proper food stores is rotation. Old food sitting on the shelf is just unusable clutter sitting around your house. Food stacked in boxes was failing our rotation.
And it applies to almost anything you have. Clothing you never wear and does not fit is just wasting space. Toys your children won’t play with. The list could go on and on.
Everyone says do your spring cleaning. Yet the best time is the present. For us this next week, it’s going to be continuing to sort and clean the extra clutter from the house. What better time to get things done than when it’s never above freezing, and you don’t want to be outside?
Don’t wait until later when you can do it today. Because if your spring is like ours, that’s time for getting the garden ready, not cleaning the house of extra things.
