Summer Storms & Fireworks

Summer fireworks on this historic 4th of July will be incredible to watch. 250 years! It is amazing to think we have only been a part of this country’s history for such a small slice of that time. Here’s to a wonderful weekend with family and friends.

But fireworks can also bring a bit of fear, much like a sudden summer storm. The booming noise has a way of cutting straight through to our minds and hearts. And just like fireworks, lightning is dazzling to the eye. Each has their own hidden risks too!

Fireworks carry the threat of fires and burns, just like a swift lightning strike deep in the forest. Power outages are all too common when a strike hits the local lines, and what started as a fun evening can quickly turn to panic in the minds of your children.

Beyond the summer storms come the hottest days of the year. AC units running in thousands of homes can easily overtax the local grid and drop an entire neighborhood into blackness. In fact, some areas even schedule rolling blackouts just to conserve resources and reduce the risk of long-term failure.

Having a well-thought-out plan before you lose power is an instant fix to that panic. Your kids no longer fear the lights going out and are ready to grab flashlights and a card game.

While the lights were out at a local event recently, I had a great discussion with someone about planning ahead and the simple things you should always keep on hand. That conversation inspired me to dig in and write a complete, comprehensive resource on handling outages that last longer than just a couple of hours.

That resource is live on the site today: The Family Power Outage Guide: 72 Hours Off-Grid

Don’t worry about digging into it today, though. You can check it out on Monday after the burgers and hot dogs have settled.

Have a wonderful & safe 4th of July!
